Browns were appointed by the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology construct the Weston building (now named the Manchester Conference Centre). These prestigious facilities included:
Browns undertook the construction of the conference centre, hotel and student accommodation working closely with the university to provide state of the art facilities.
Construction Challenges:
The site for construction is located above sandstone caverns which was the early building material for the city. The presence of the caverns provided specialist work with caverns being injected with PFA Grout. As part of the groundwork Browns had to undertaken the largest vibro compacting piling scheme in Europe at that time.
Coupled with this was the challenge of working in close proximity to the University buildings whilst the university was fully operational and the campus was occupied. Hence significant collaboration with the university was required to ensure that there was no disruption to the teaching and study activities.
