Castlefield is Manchester's regenerated canalside district. Once a derelict and abandoned no-go area it has been developed into an upmarket waterside district of offices, apartments, galleries, bars and visitor attractions.
The Castlefield hotel project was the construction of a brand new hotel for the YMCA in Manchester. The hotel has approximately 78 bedrooms with conferencing and banqueting facilities. In addition to the main hotel building Browns also undertook the construction of a sports hall and swimming pool to a high specification.
Along with the construction of the hotel and leisure complex Browns also undertook the construction of the Castlefield Steps and opened up two old canal basins
Construction Challenges:
The site had previously been used as a cement works and so the land was heavily contaminated and required extensive decontamination. In addition to which the piling on the scheme was complex and a large retaining wall had to be constructed due to the leisure complex being at a semi basement level.
