The Young Persons Work Experience Initiative

Date Presented: 18th August 2009

Browns Construction is pleased to be involved in the Young Persons Work Experience Initiative and have recently awarded prizes to students at two of the participating schools; Castle Hill Special Needs, Brinnington, Stockport and St. James R. C. Cheadle Hulme.

The lead organisation running the Young Persons Work Experience Initiative is Stockport MBC on behalf of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities. Stockport Council’s Environmental Health and Trading Standards Department arranged Health & Safety Road Shows designed for students who are about to undertake work experience. The aim of the events was to raise the awareness of Health & Safety among young people and provide them with vital information on hazards and risk. In the United Kingdom since 1998 the British Safety Council report that 66 young people have died at work; most of them during their first few months in a new job.

Upon completion of the Road Shows the students were invited to complete questionnaires with a prize of an iPod donated by Browns Construction for the two schools.

At separate Awards Ceremonies, Bill Murphy, Browns Construction Group’s Managing Director awarded the iPods to the winning students.

Browns Construction Group Limited is proud to be able to get involved with the initiative and provide sponsorship. Gavin King the Safety, Health, Environmental, Training & Quality Manager for Browns says:

“Here at Browns we invest heavily in the health and safety of our staff and any communities close to our construction sites. Getting involved in this initiative is a great opportunity for Browns to support such an initiative. For many years Browns has encouraged and fully supported both work experience students and apprenticeship schemes. The construction industry is a high risk environment with a multitude of challenges to overcome in ensuring the well being and the health safety of all employees, sub-contractors, clients and visitors on our projects. If we can help raise awareness and support such initiatives it vastly reduces the risk of any young person(s) being a government statistic. Education, training and awareness is essential to ensure the young work experience students of today are aware of workplace health and safety and I believe this forward thinking initiative presents this opportunity and I commend Stockport on their groundbreaking initiative, which we are delighted to have supported as a local contractor. We look forward to establishing a long and positive relationship with Stockport MBC and their ongoing work experience initiative”.
