Browns Celebrates 147 Years With £147m Of New Business

Browns Construction Group Ltd is celebrating new contract wins worth a total of £147 million....in its 147th year of business.

Founded in 1860 as Browns of Wilmslow, the residential development specialist has enjoyed a steady period of expansion that has been underpinned by its parent company Headcrown plc that has anticipated turnover this year of around £300m.

Contributing to the £147 million are projects such as the striking ‘Gravity’ on Store Street, in the Ancoats area of Manchester, a residential development of the same size and scale as the renowned Beetham Tower. Also ‘Gateway Plaza’, a landmark residential development in Barnsley funded by the EU and created in association with BREEAM that will deliver 189 apartments laid out over 15 storeys, plus 12,137 sq ft of office space over seven storeys.

Browns’ unrivalled expertise in high rise construction makes them the perfect choice for developers looking to deliver challenging regeneration projects either from derelict ground or derelict buildings. This year, Browns has engineered the construction of Plymouth Grove, 116 Key worker apartments and 72 student apartments of 5,6 and 7 bedrooms in a triangular shaped building ranging from 6 floors and ending with a landmark 13 storey tower, located on the busy junction of Upper Brook Street and Plymouth Grove.
The site was formerly a Happy Eater fast food restaurant . Also, the creation of a fourteen storey, fifty three apartment building on Mirabel Street in Manchester that saw Browns return to its roots - the company famously restored bomb damaged Manchester Cathedral just round the corner at the end of the Second World War.

Closer to home, Browns Construction Group Ltd will shortly commence work on the conversion and regeneration of the Grade 2 listed Barnes Hospital in Cheadle into apartments and houses. As a listed building, Browns will work within tight guidelines to sympathetically restore grandeur and beauty to one of the areas most important landmarks. The first phase of this contract has a value of £10m, the overall scheme will be delivered in three phases lasting 3 years.
