Browns Construction Group is celebrating a prestigious Silver RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Award.
Browns collected the award at a glittering ceremony staged at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel. Said RoSPA Awards Manager, David Rawlins; Browns has shown a commitment to protecting the health and well being of its employees and others. We hope other businesses will follow its lead.
Browns was recognised as demonstrating best practice for Health and Safety after instigating a company wide policy that all managerial, supervisory and planning staff be trained to a health and safety standard usually only required of construction site managers. Last year, fifteen employees from the company’s buying, quantity surveying and engineering departments completed a CITB Site Manager Safety Training Course.
An NVQ training programme, developed in line with CSCS initiatives, saw over 50% of Brown’s employees undertaking training at levels 2, 3, 4 and 5. This commitment to staff development helped Browns earn a CSCS Gold Award with 94% of employees, nearly 20% more than regulations specified, successfully completing training for the new CSCS cards.
Browns’ head office in Cheadle, Cheshire, was also established as an official CSCS health and safety touch screen test centre with staff trained as invigilators offering sub contractors the opportunity to achieve the skills standards set by CSCS for the industry.
Managing Director Bill Murphy says "We don’t just pay lip service to industry regulations, we embrace the foundations of health and safety good practice and apply policy and principle to every aspect of our everyday operations. Company wide, health and safety is regarded with equal, if not greater, reverence as the more commercial aspects of our business."
"RoSPA is a respected industry benchmark and to receive a Silver award is a welcome recognition for the efforts and focus the whole group has placed on health and safety."
