Cliff Hawksworth Receives MCIOB

The History:

The idea of applying for membership to the CIOB came to me 15 years ago whilst I worked in the Middle East.

I did nothing about it apart from occasionally thinking "I should do something about making an effort to at least make contact with them".

It went no further until I joined Browns and I was in the position that made me review not only my own training but that of all the other employees of the company.

I was busy having meetings to establish a training plan for other people when it finally dawned that I was going to insist on others getting qualifications that I hadn’t bothered trying to get myself. My reasons were always that I was to busy.

It was at this point when I new that I really needed to lead from the front and demonstrate it to those working for me.

I had made a policy that all employees of Browns should be CSCS qualified and not only to have a card in their pocket but to be qualified to the level of management that they worked.
Senior managers needed a Black card, to achieve this, an NVQ 5 was the prerequisite to achieving it. I had my Black card through the grandfather rights but most of our senior managers had only achieved platinum. Browns had never really had any involvement with the NVQ training at senior level so I made it my business to change this.

I discovered at this time that the NVQ 5 was considered a very high vocational qualification and that it was accepted by the CIOB as part of the entry into the Institute.

Getting There:

I enrolled on an NVQ 5 course with the Building College at Birmingham, in October 2006, and successfully completed the course and received my certificate in April 2008.

Having got past the first hurdle I made an application to become an Incorporated member of the CIOB, I achieved this by June 2008, and decided that I should not leave it at that because I had plans for two of my senior managers to achieve full Membership.

I immediately started on my work to attain full Chartered Membership , I successfully completed my application in November 2008 when I attended a professional interview with Fellows of the Chartered Institute of Building and was from there invited to the International HQ of the CIOB on 18th, December 2008,to receive my Chartered Certificate from the President of the CIOB.

The occasion was attended by proud families and friends of all those receiving their certificates, there was a splendid lunch and speeches from past presidents. The event was enhanced because of the festive spirit everyone felt at that time of year.

Only those achieving full Membership and Fellowships can understand the true meaning of reaching the top in their chosen profession because of all the hard work and only experience gained through many years in the construction industry that has gone into reaching full Chartered status.

The effort has been worth it because I can now demonstrate the belief I have always had in myself, to be a true and qualified professional.

The Benefits:

From the moment I became an incorporated member of the CIOB, I became aware of the support network they have, which includes a training programme that can only be the envy of other institutes.

The CIOB has a mentoring network which is available to anyone in need of guidance in particular when working towards a higher level within the CIOB.

There are regular training revues and committee meetings at local branch offices through out the UK and Northern Island, all members and their guests are welcome to attend.

Going through the process of attaining Chartered Membership has reawakened experiences in me that I had forgotten, the continued CPD, required to keep membership valid is an important tool to keep members on their toes at all times.

I would recommend to anyone thinking about membership, to act on it and not leave it as I did until my later years. The benefits from membership are too great to miss out on.
